Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs)

Healing everyBODY through massage.

What is this?

A cumulative trauma or overuse of the muscles, tendons and ligaments.

The Cycle

Repeated overuse causes the joint to strain and micro tear. Muscles tighten to protect the area, which decreases circulation and necessary healing. Scar tissue begins to form over the injury, forming  weaker and rigid tissue causing restrictions in movement, Muscles will then weaken due to painful use, compensating muscles "pick up the work load", causing altered postural function and possible secondary overuse injuries. Swelling also can lead to nerve compression.

Symptoms

  • pain with movement
  • pain with other movement lasting for longer durations
  • other possible symptoms include tingling, numbness, poor dexterity and coordination. Often pain is "referred" from areas with trigger points.

Common types

Carpal tunnel, bursitis, plantar fascitis, tendinitis or tendinosis, "tennis" or "golfers" elbow

How Massage Can Help

  • increase healing by reducing muscle tension, release of painful trigger points
  • increase circulation eliminates toxins, reduces swelling and promotes healing
  • breakdown scar tissue in tendons and soft tissue decreasing the chance of retearing with increased mobility
  • breaks the pain-injury-pain cycle
